According to meagre records available to us at this late date, the Youngs were among the earliest settlers in Madison Township, Fairfield County, Ohio. Where they cam from is subject to conjecture, but it has been said that they came from Kentucky. Zane's Trace was opened up in 1797, and in the following year settlers began coming into Fairfield County from both ends of the Trace - Wheeling, Virginia, and Maysville, Kentucky. It was a difficult and dangerous country as hostile bands of Indians were still roaming over the country. The date of arrival of the Youngs in Fairfield Couty, as closely as can be determined, was between the opening of Zane's Trace and the year 1800. There is absolutely no doubt about them being among the very earliest settlers in Madison Township. According to one account, the father of these brothers came too, but such cannot be further verified. ("A History of the Wolfe Family," Page 10, by Herbert M. Turner)
John Young owned several hundred acres of the choicest farm land in Madison Township. John Young served as clerk at the first meeting of Madison Township Trustees that was held at the home of Valentine Wolf in the year 1813. ("A History of the Wolfe Family," Page 11, by Herbert M. Turner)

Uncle Matthew Young was a terrific drinker. When he went to town and imbibed too much, as he frequently did, all his cronies had to do was to place him in his wagon and his horse, which knew the way, would take him directly home. Then his girls would come out and help him out of the wagon and into the house. This particular time his horse brought him home as usual, and his girls, as they always did, came out to help him into the house. They had him part way out of the wagon when he untimely sought to praise them: "Well bless ye gals, ye let me down as aisy as a tay pot!" Unfortunately for him, the girls exploded into violent laughter and lost their hold on him with the result that he went sprawling onto the ground.
